Your DART orders can help those affected by mental health problems

28 August 2020

Now, more than ever UK-wide charity, Mental Health UK, needs our support. Spend with us and we’ll donate to them — at no extra cost to you.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been telling you about the four charities we’re donating to in order to help those in our sector who are going through hard times. Today we’re talking about Mental Health UK. By supporting this charity, we hope to see improvements in the mental health of construction and trades people beginning to match up with the improvements our sector has seen in physical safety.

What does Mental Health UK do?

Mental Health UK supports people affected by mental health problems, including friends, family and carers. Working across the UK, they bring together over 40 years of expertise from their four founding national mental health charities. Together they provide advice, information and support, and work to increase an understanding of mental health issues.

1 in 4 of us has experienced mental health problems*, the wider impact on family and friends affects an even greater number. Mental Health UK’s support of all those affected is far-reaching. They also provide training to businesses and organisations, providing them with the tools and support needed to improve mental health in the workplace.

Mental health in our sector

As we mentioned in a previous article, Local Heroes recently conducted a survey of skilled tradespeople and found that 45% felt there isn't enough mental health support and awareness in the industry, and 60% felt there’s still a stigma around openly discussing mental wellbeing.

We know that between 2011 and 2015, construction workers accounted for up to 13.2 % of the total number of in-work suicides. And with more openness about mental health, it’s now understood that 1 in 4 people in the UK has experienced a mental health problem. It’s also been widely covered in the press that mental health problems have increased during the Covid pandemic. So, we feel Mental Health UK can be of real help to those in our sector who need them — possibly now, more than ever.

How our donations help

Through Mental Health UK, people affected by mental health problems can access money advice, support groups and online support, as well as information — and much more. Here are just some of the ways in which our donations can help their vital work.

£5 can help keep online information up-to-date with essential information to help people who may be feeling anxious or isolated to manage their mental health.

£10 pays for a call to the advice and information line; supporting someone living with mental illness who may be feeling in distress during this time.

£15 can enable someone who has mental health problems to access the online support community, Clic, were they can connect to others in a safe environment.

£20 can contribute towards personalised advice and support for someone living with mental health and money problems.

If you’d like to help people affected by mental health problems, ask us to donate to Mental Health UK when you place your next DART order and we’ll make it happen, at no extra cost to you.

If you need support yourself or just want to know more about their work, you can find Mental Health UK at www.mentalhealth-uk.org. Or follow them on twitter @mentalhealthuk or Instagram @mhealthuk
