What Are Magnetic Bit Holders?

What are magnetic bit holders and what are magnetic bit holders used for?

Magnetic bit holders are indispensable power tool accessories for all drill drivers. A bit holder holds the driver bit in position which allows any power drill to drive screws.
Magnetic bit holders help to make the drilling process far easier as the screw is held securely in place and does not have to be held in position. This is because the magnetic in the bit helps to hold the screw to the drill so the chances of the fixing falling off when fastening or unfastening is less likely.

This makes it much quicker and more efficient when fastening multiple fixings, such as screws into drywall, as you don’t need to hold them in place once attached to the drill.

They are very small and easy to use, making them must have tools in any professional tradesman’s or DIY enthusiast’s toolbox.

How to use magnetic bit holders?

Magnetic bit holders are extremely easy and simple to use.

To put the magnetic bit holder in a combi drill, you release the chuck to insert the bit holder, and then tighten the chuck back up, once the bit holder is in position. Whereas, putting a magnetic bit holder into an impact driver is much easier than a combi drill. You simply push the hex end into the driver. N.B. If the magnetic bit holder does not feature a hex shank, then it cannot be used in an impact driver.

All of DART’s magnetic bit holders feature the hex end allowing them to be used with both combi, and impact drivers.

A benefit of the magnetic bit holder is that once it is in the drill, you can easily switch between your driver bits, without removing it from the chuck.

At DART, we recommend that the torsion magnet bit holder can be used for all drill bits with a hex end, not just driver bits. By inserting the torsion magnetic impact bit holder into your combi drill, you have the ability to quickly swap drill bits using the quick-change mechanism in the torsion magnetic bit holder saving you time.

How to remove driver bits from magnetic bit holders?

Depending on what magnetic bit holder you have, there are different ways to remove the bit from the magnetic bit holder.

With DART’s premium double magnetic bit holder and stainless-steel magnetic bit holder, you simply just pull the bit out of the holder. This is because they are only held by the magnet. You may need to use a small amount of force in order to remove the bit, due to the strong magnets.

Whereas with DART’s torsion magnetic impact bit holder, this includes a quick release mechanism, and in order to remove the bit, you need to pull the quick release mechanism back to release the ball bearing inside and allow the bit to be removed.

What makes a drill bit magnetic?

It is the holder that is magnetic, not the drill bit. Due to the metal composition of drill and driver bits, once inserted into a magnetic bit holder, they become magnetized.

Where are the magnets on DART’s magnetic bit holders?

DART’s premium double magnetic bit holder includes two magnets. The first magnet is at the base of the holder, which magnetizes the driver bit, and holds it in place. This magnet allows the fixing to secure onto the driver bit. The second magnet on the holder is at the head, which holds the fixing against the bit holder, securing both the driver bit and fixing completely. As this holder has two magnets, it is able to hold 1kg of weight! This makes it the ultimate double magnetic bit holder, and allows for single handed operation.

The torsion magnetic impact bit holder features one magnet. This is at the base of the holder which magnetize the driver bit, to hold the fixing securely. The torsion magnetic bit holders also feature the quick release function, so there is very little chance of the driver bit coming out of the holder as it isn’t just held in by a magnet.

The stainless-steel magnetic bit holder also only features one magnet at the base of the holder.

DART’s magnetic bit holders

DART has a range of three different magnetic bit holders, including the premium double magnetic bit holder, the torsion magnetic impact bit holder and the stainless-steel magnetic bit holder.

Premium double magnetic bit holderThis unique device enables accurate fixings in overhead or awkward positions without the necessity of pre-drilling. The surface of the screw head is held on by an additional ultra-strong, powerful rare earth magnet allowing for vertical or horizontal screwing without slippage. The holder allows precision screwing with a single hand operation helping to save time.
The in-built spring allows for countersink, allowing you to sink the screw below the surface of the material with the premium double magnetic bit holder. This holder is suitable for use with all 25mm driver bits. The bits retract within the mechanism allowing the screw to magnetically attach to the end of the holder. It is suitable for all ¼” hexagon driver bits, and manufactured in Germany, so has a premium quality. This makes it one of the best magnetic bit holders in the UK.

Torsion magnetic impact bit holder – This is specially designed towards the needs and practice of the tradesman. It is 60mm long and is suitable for all ¼’’ hexagon insert bits. This is ideal for difficult and general screw driving applications. It is a very tough and absorbing holder with a quick-change mechanism. It also includes a ¼” Hex quick change shank.

Stainless steel magnetic bit holderThis is specially designed towards the needs and practice of the tradesman. This is the most budget friendly magnetic bit holder in the DART range, but for its price, it is extremely high quality. It is suitable for all ¼’’ hexagon insert bits.
It is manufactured from one piece of metal, so there are no welds. This gives it far more strength than other stainless steel magnet bit holders on the market, and has a significantly smaller chance of breaking.

What is the best magnetic bit holder?

The best magnetic bit holder will depend on your application and needs. The best magnetic bit holder for single handed operation is the DART premium double magnetic bit holder. The best magnetic bit holder for high torsion applications is the torsion magnetic impact bit holder. Finally, the best magnetic bit holder for a low budget is the DART stainless steel magnetic bit holders.
